Because the time is NOW
http://www.gizmag.com/new-ford-polic...rceptor/14515/

Cities around the nation are struggling with debt and severe budget shortfalls. Many municipalities are on the brink of declaring bankruptcy.

So It makes sooo much sense to advertise new cop cars to them! With all the money they don't have, I'm sure these will sell like underage sex!

Do our elected officials really expect tax revenue is going to explode any minute now? Even if you assume a sustained commercial recovery (which is probably not going to happen..) and significant employment gains over the next two years (which is even less likely) you still have the fact that incurred losses can be applied to future tax liabilities for several years, so even in the best circumstances municipal and state tax revenue (let's not even talk about federal) won't significantly recover for years to come.

Fuck it, who cares? Cop cars are certainly a more useful purchase than most of the junk taxpayers buy. At least these are flashy.

Armatrix SmartGun disables itself so you don't have to

http://www.gizmag.com/armatrix-wrist...andguns/14044/

To ensure criminals can’t just steal the watch along with the gun the user must first have their fingerprints verified. The fingerprint is read by a sensor on the watch, which compares it against an internal database of stored prints. Once the print is verified the watch is then activated for a definable period of time – a police officer’s work shift for example – or until manually deactivated.

Once the authentication procedure has been completed the weapon’s integrated locking electronics and actuators unlock the weapon automatically when it is within a predefined distance of the watch. In this way even if the gun is lost in a scuffle, it will be useless if it is not close enough to the watch. Also, if the watch is ripped off or removed, both the watch transponder and weapon are deactivated immediately.
...

This is a fucking brilliant idea. Now all I gotta do is bring a jamming device that can interfere with whatever wireless signal they're using (bluetooth? wifi? doesn't matter...don't need to decrypt it, just jam it) and...piggy can't shoot back.

Fucking. Retarded.

Abusive cops are the norm, not the exception
Need to repost this reply to Onion to the FP. Even a 30-second google search annoys the hell out of me.

337 people tased to DEATH by police in 2007/2008:

A 6yo boy tased by police:

1 in 3 people need medical attention after being tased:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/...-injuries.html

16yo injured teen tasered 19 times by police:

Hell... just search google:

Why are cops abusive for the most part?

They're grossly under-paid.
They put their lives at risk on a daily basis.
Most jurisdictions actually state the -maximum- level of education an officer can have.

Virtually no sane individual becomes a cop. The system is just begging to be abused. And it is. Often.

Cop tasers 10-year-old girl for being a 10-year-old girl
http://www.truecrimereport.com/2009/...tasers_10-.php

Earlier this week, we told you about the 73-year-old grandma who was caught on tape being tasered twice during a traffic stop. Now it seems an Arkansas officer has tasered a 10-year-old girl. Our question: Where the hell are they getting these cops?
Simple. Everywhere. The current system encourages bad cop behavior. It's sickening.

Sorry Onion -- the only rational position is to distrust all police officers by default. In the majority of cases they are not there to help.

This is sickening...
http://scienceblogs.com/dispatches/2...he_day_off.php

On October 17, Vaughn was racing from one call to another when his squad car fatally struck 10-year-old Cole Berardi, who was riding his bicycle on a darkened portion of Belt Line Road in southeast Dallas...

Cpl. Vaughn's lights and siren were not activated as required.

The police accident report released lists speed as a contributing factor in the accident. It states that the speed of Cpl. Vaughn's vehicle ranged from 69 mph to 72 mph at the time of impact. The speed limit on that stretch of road is 40 mph.

Vaughn was later cleared by a grand jury of any criminal culpability. But internal investigators have since concluded that he failed to the follow the department's established procedures.
