I love Berserk, the drawings are detailed and its got a great storyline. I definitely recommend it..but if your going to buy it, be prepared for the costs..since 35 volumes have been released, and its still ongoing. If you get it at volume 3, you will still be able to understand it, since the first two volumes are more of an introduction to what will come, than anything else. At volume 3, near the end, is when the main character, Guts, backstory begins and where, in my opinion, the manga starts.

All in all, the best solution i can recommend is since the first two volumes aren't for sale there anyways, read them online..if you like the artwork and style, then pick up the rest. As i said, the first two volumes are more of an introduction to what most of the story will be like anyways, so if you dont like that, you probably wont like the rest of it. Please note though, the first two volumes and about half of the third have little to do with the main story, so if you get confused at the plot in the beginning or whatever, it will be revealed how he came to that point later on in the story.
